Whistle Stop Art Studios in Santa Barbara
Presents a workshop by Skip Lawrence: “Artistic Exploration”
February 18- 22 and February 25- March 1, 2019
These two workshops will be held at Santa Barbara’s new Community Arts Workshop, 631 Garden Street. Come to enjoy the California Riviera, congenial atmosphere, lots of painting, and warm hospitality!
Skip writes, “Everyone is capable of making art in his or her unique style and statement. The first step in doing this is to clarify what you want to say and how to say it. In order to set some clear creative goals, I begin each workshop with a one-on-one 20-minute conversation with each student. I ask each student to provide 3 digital images of their recent work. It is in this conversation that we identify strengths and stumbling blocks and make a concrete plan for our work together.
Some will set a course to improve techniques and design; others will pursue clarifying ideas and search for new ways to give form to their ideas.
All styles are encouraged: realism, abstract, or non-objective. The ultimate goal is to paint more honestly and personally, avoiding “painting like someone else”. So, bring lot of paper, canvas, pigments, and whatever you use to build your art and let’s dig in, have fun, work hard, and create unique images for which we are truly proud.
William B. (Skip) Lawrence received a B.F.A. degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art and M.A. degree from Towson University. His book, Painting Light and Shadow in Watercolor, was published in 1994. Skip is editor-and-chief of The Palette Magazine.
