Constructions

Constructions are made from pieces. Each character is drawn separately in my sketchbook. From there I choose which ones to placed in a setting where they will exist and interact in an invented world. They are like playing with paper dolls given stories to tell. In this process, I come to know each one in an intimate way. As actors in a play, some characters show up in more than one painting.

City Connections

When my mind goes wandering, it goes to the city. I imbibe the Billy Joel song, “I’m in a New York State of Mind” – that’s me. The years spent in the city spark certain feelings of daily life, the aloneness in a crowd, being disconnected, making connections, the exhilaration of activity, that is what I paint.

Music

I was a musician before becoming an artist so I paint what I know, and love. I played French horn, but only started putting them into paintings recently. Bass players and percussionists intrigue me. I think it is their arm muscles. They are just interesting.
